England's World Twenty20-winning opener Michael Lumb has retired from cricket with immediate effect.

The Nottinghamshire batsman, who scored more than 11,000 first-class runs and made 106 in the first of his three one-day internationals, has been advised to quit because of an ankle injury.

"I'm extremely disappointed I've had to retire from cricket, particularly in the middle of the season, but I have to respect medical opinion," said Lumb, who played in all seven games as England won the Twenty20 title in 2010.

"I would like to thank all my team-mates, the coaching staff and everyone else at the club for making my stay at Nottinghamshire such a memorable one.
