Cricket quotes of 2015: World Cup and Ashes take centre stage

Joe Root stifles a chuckle after Alastair Cook is felled

It's not hard to put 2015 into words - quite simply, it's been a brilliant year of cricket. Here is a selection of our quotes of the year...

"I remember the 1992 World Cup final. It's my earliest memory. Inzamam-ul Haq was skinny. Well, skinny-ish." Moeen Ali, during the Cricket World Cup

"Opportunities are obviously dwindling for sides outside the elite and that's obviously not ideal for trying to grab the game at home. There is an appetite, but we need an opportunity." Ireland's Ed Joyce bemoans the prospect of a 10-team World Cup in 2019.

"In nearly 40 years of playing for and watching England in one-day cricket, I have not seen a worse performance than the one I saw in Wellington." Ian Botham slams England after their World Cup mauling by New Zealand.

"The boys at Channel Nine like Michael Slater and Mark Taylor will talk about the time when on two occasions on one day, Richie didn't even get off the mark! He never said a word for his half-hour stint - I think that's great broadcasting." David Lloyd remembers Richie Benaud, who passed away in April aged 84.

A look back at the career of legendary cricket commentator Richie Benaud

"No one has ever doubted his ability as a batsman or as a cricket player. Over the months and years, the trust has eroded. It is not in the best short-term interests of the side for Kevin Pietersen to be in the team this summer, but he is not barred from the side." Andrew Strauss confirms Kevin Pietersen isn't part of England's plans for the summer.

"It's just a different era and we are all gobsmacked at the way these teams are approaching 50-over cricket." David Lloyd hails 'new England' during an epic ODI series with New Zealand.

"I can't wait to get over there and play another Ashes against England in their conditions after beating them so convincingly in Australia. It's going to be nice to go in their backyard. If we continue to play the way we have been playing over the last 12-18 months, I don't think that they'll come close to us to be honest." Steve Smith's bullish Ashes prediction.

"The ball really slipped out - when I let it go, I thought it was six as he hit me for four the ball before that. Root actually made the catch look harder than it was." Moeen Ali reviews his winning wicket from the first Ashes Test.

An eye-watering moment for Alastair Cook

"I was right next to Cookie and it did not sound good! I think he made a bit more out of it [than needed]. If that had been Essex with no cameras, he would have got up and got on with it next ball, I reckon. At least he saved four!" Ian Bell remains unsympathetic for Cook, after the captain took a painful blow in the groin.

"That's unbelievable from Ben Stokes! He's threatened to do this in the field. We knew he was special. The ball was behind him! Magnificent! Magnificent!" Nasser Hussain waxes lyrical over that blinder in the gully.

"Nearly Ben Stokes! Come on!" Nasser Hussain plays to the crowd after almost pulling off his own blinder in our catching demo.

Nasser Hussain nearly replicates Ben Stokes' amazing catch

"It's the sort of score you expect to see at the Under-9s on the village green." Ian Botham on Australia's 60 all out.

"He's only just turned up, let's not give him too much credit". Alastair Cook on Trevor Bayliss, post Trent Bridge Test.

"Just 599 days after handing over the urn, Cook has his redemption." Nasser Hussain commentates on the moment England regain the Ashes.

Mark Wood describes what it's like to take the Ashes-winning wicket

"We've done something I didn't think was quite possible at the beginning of the summer." Alastair Cook hints at how much his side grew during the Ashes.

"It took me a while to discover I'd been caught out by the 'phantom snipper', who had sneakily cut holes in my socks so big that both my feet went straight through. He didn't spare my boxers, either." Joe Root's Ashes celebrations don't go entirely to plan.

"I'm very flattered, Joe, that you likened me to Albert Einstein. It was quite a good impression of the late Brian Clough, I thought. But, young man, when your little purple patch comes to an end, I'll have you back in the dock!" Bob Willis responds to Joe Root's impression.

Bob Willis has a stern warning for Joe Root!

"I'll be remembered for taking one catch - it was an important one and a defining moment of my career." Geraint Jones retires from cricket a Royal London One-Day cup winner, 10 years on from giving England's 2005 Ashes team a helping hand.

"As this experiment was more successful than anyone could have imagined, I think it will now become commonplace in some parts of the world, not in every series but in most. We have got people taking about Test cricket again." Marcus Trescothick gives day-night Tests a big thumbs up.

"It looked as though the lacquer had come off and it was turning green basically. There were bits of pink left, but it was more green than pink by the end." Adam Voges assesses the state of the colour-challenged pink ball after the first day-night Test.

"He has been a constant in the England side, or the England A side, or the under-19s. He probably has not stopped touring for 12 or 13 years, so a real good break, I think, will do him the world of good." Alastair Cook justifies England's decision to drop Ian Bell for the tour of South Africa.

Sir Ian Botham says that he would like to do one more charity walk in Australia

"My crew weren't overly happy initially but I'm going to do one more, in Australia and New Zealand. It would be rude of me to miss out Australia, it has been so good to me over the years. We will do the major cities there, and in New Zealand. That will be the swansong." Beefy confirms he has one more charity adventure in him after completing his Walking the Rainbow Nation marathon.
