Jos Buttler urges 'change of mindset' from England ODI side

Jos Buttler believes England need to "lose the fear of failure" if they are to match New Zealand in the forthcoming one-day international series.

Incoming England boss Trevor Bayliss does not start officially until after the series, but did have an input on the selection of the squad to face the Black Caps.

Ian Bell, Stuart Broad, James Anderson and Gary Ballance have all been dropped in favour of a more youthful line-up and Buttler insists a "change of mindset" is vital for the five-match series, which starts at Edgbaston on June 9.

"It's fine to make a mistake, if you're fully committed to trying to take someone on and hit someone for six over his head, and you pick out long on, that happens," said Buttler.

"We need to lose the fear of failure, and guys who are coming in must play exactly the same way at international level as they have at county level.

"You've got to keep your authenticity and your individuality and play the way you want to play, and that exciting way you've played for your county.

"It's about giving guys responsibility and freedom to go and play.

"Ben Stokes is one of the most naturally talented players we've got in England and we just need to get him on the park and tell him to go and do his thing.

"Nine times out of 10, that's going to be spectacular to watch, so it's a lot about giving guys confidence.

"You've also got to understand you're not going to score 100 off 60 balls every time either, but giving guys confidence and freedom to express themselves - to make that 100 off 60 balls a realistic chance."

Buttler is full of praise for New Zealand's aggressive approach which helped them reach the World Cup final earlier this year.

"It's a hugely exciting series, you have to commend the way New Zealand came out and played to win that second Test and draw the series at Headingley," he added.

"They really put pressure on us. That's exactly what they do in one-day cricket too.

"They are very aggressive, so it's great for us to come up against them. They can be a benchmark for where we need to get to as well. We need to follow the lead they've taken in one day cricket.

"In a few years' time we'll look back on the World Cup that's just gone and say it was New Zealand who started to change the way one-day cricket is played."

Surrey's Jason Roy is one of seven players in the 14-man squad who did not play at the World Cup and Buttler has tipped him to shine this summer.

I'm really excited to watch Jason Roy play; I know he's been around the domestic game for a few years, knocking on the door.

"The side picked is very exciting, very explosive. These are players who can innovate, they are powerful players," he said.

"They don't need to do anything differently, they just need to go and do it on a grander scale. I'm really excited to watch Jason Roy play; I know he's been around the domestic game for a few years, knocking on the door.

"He's played a Twenty20 international at the back-end of last year, but he's one of these guys who is box office and everyone knows in the county game that he's got the potential to go on and achieve great things.

"And hopefully in this series we'll see glimpses of just what he is capable of."
