Australia hope to have injured pace bowler Mitchell Starc available for their return series in New Zealand next February.

Starc suffered stress fractures in his right foot on the opening day of the third Test against the Kiwis in Adelaide, but the injury will require rest rather than surgery.

He was able to bat in Australia's first innings, scoring an unbeaten 24, but it was obvious the discomfort he was in when running between the wickets.

"He (Starc) has obviously got a crack in his foot," Australia's bowling coach Craig McDermott said.

"The good news for us is it's not going to be as long as we thought.

"He's in a (protective) boot for three weeks and we'll start working from there.

"So hopefully we can get him up for the (return) New Zealand series and the World Twenty20 where he's ranked No 1 in the world.

"He'll be very important for us in both series so we'll look forward to getting him back."
