Wicketkeeper added as cover for BJ Watling

Wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk has been added to the New Zealand squad for the first Test against South Africa. Van Wyk flew into Dunedin on Monday evening to act as cover for wicketkeeper-batsman BJ Watling, who is struggling with a hip complaint ahead of this week's opening Test. The South Africa-born 32-year-old, who plays for the Central Districts Stags, will know more in the next 24 hours if he is to play. "Watling has been suffering from some irritation around his hip joint," said physiotherapist Paul Close.

Monitoring closely

"We're monitoring it closely and will know more in the next 24 hours, after he has completed training and had time to rest." Van Wyk was in contention for the wicketkeeping berth in New Zealand's Test side at the start of the summer, before the selectors decided to hand the role to Watling for the one-off clash against Zimbabwe. Watling duly scored his maiden Test century to strengthen his position as first-choice keeper.
