Bangladesh moved a step closer to qualification for the 2017 Champions Trophy after they defeated India for only the fourth time in 30 ODI’s as they secured a 79-run win in Dhaka.
Left-arm pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman was the key man for the home side at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium as he became only the second Bangladeshi bowler to claim five wickets on his ODI debut.
The 19-year-old finished with figures of 5-50 after running through an experienced India batting line-up.
Mustafizur’s victims included Rohit Sharma, who top-scored for India before being dismissed for 63.
India were eventually bowled out for 228 in 46 overs, with Mustafizur's cutter proving to be decisive, despite India's openers giving them a solid 95-run start.
Bangladesh had earlier posted a total of 307, their highest ever against India, with Tamim Iqbal (60), Soumya Sarkar (54) and Shakib Al Hasan (52) leading the way.
Opting to bat first, the home side began well as Tamim and Sarkar put on a 102-run opening stand before a rain break halted the game for an hour.
That seemed to affect the momentum of the innings but Bangladesh’s total proved to be more than enough as they beat India for the first time since the 2012 Asia Cup.
More recently they lost to India in the Cricket World Cup quarter-finals.
The victory also puts Bangladesh in a strong position to rise above West Indies into the seventh in the ODI world rankings, and qualify for the Champions Trophy after missing the last two events.
