India v England: Who are the ones to watch during the ODI series?

A captain's comeback, leading leggie and savvy seamers

England's captain Eoin Morgan plays a shot during play in the second ODI between against Pakistan at Lord's

After a rather one-sided Test series, England return to India for the white-ball leg of their tour looking to prove that in the shorter formats, at least, they are capable of matching their hosts in subcontinent conditions.

While danger-men such as Virat Kohli, Joe Root and Ben Stokes remain, a new format brings new threats for both sides to contend with.

Here we look at some of the less-heralded names who could have an important role to play in the ODI and T20I series…

Amit Mishra

The 34-year-old leggie had a tough time of it in the Test series, taking just three wickets across the the two Tests in which he was picked, as he struggled to match the control and consistency of the Indian finger-spinners.

However, when it comes to the 50-over game, Mishra is a man in form. He was comfortably leading wicket-taker in India's most recent series, against New Zealand, picking up 15 at 14.33, including a brilliant 5-18 in the series decider.

A career average of 23.60 in ODIs compared to 35.72 in Tests shows where Mishra's strengths lie and with the field spread and England's batsmen forced to attack, the Delhi-born bowler could be a key weapon in Kohli's arsenal during the one-dayers.

Eoin Morgan

After his decision to miss the tour of Bangladesh due to security concerns, all eyes will be on the England skipper on his return to the side.

Morgan faced plenty of criticism for choosing to skip the three-match series and after Jos Buttler led England to victory, there were murmurings that the left-hander would struggle to regain his place.

However, the ECB insisted that both Morgan and Alex Hales, who also opted to miss the Bangladesh series, would be welcomed back and they have been true to their word.

Given their form against Pakistan at the end of the summer - Morgan averaging 59.66 and Hales 44.60 - both should retake their positions in the starting line-up, although a slow start to the series could see scrutiny over the pair intensify quickly.

Kedar Jadhav

With only 12 ODI caps to his name at the age of 31, Jadhav has been something of a late developer. He made his international debut in 2014, but it was only in the series with New Zealand that he really made his mark.

Jadhav played in all five games, picking up six wickets at 12.16 with a very respectable economy rate of 4.05 and best figures of 3-29. However, it is his batting that Jadhav has been better known for during his career and, aided by a couple of not outs, he averaged 45 from his four innings - second only to Kohli among the Indian batsmen.

A top-score of 41 in that series may not concern England too much but the all-rounder does have an unbeaten ODI ton to his name and having come to prominence with a 29-ball 50 on his IPL debut, Jadhav is a potentially destructive force in the Indian lower-middle order.

Jake Ball

Having been around the England set up since the beginning of last summer, Ball has had to be patient in waiting for his opportunities. In Bangladesh, though, he was given his first chance in the ODI side and grabbed it with both hands.

With England defending 309, the seamer picked up two wickets in his opening spell to help rein in the hosts' flying start. However, by the time he returned, Bangladesh looked to be coasting to victory. Two wickets in two balls from Ball changed the game before the third of his spell gave him an ODI debut five-for and sealed the win for England.

That performance saw him retain his place in the side for the remaining two ODIs, in which he picked up a further two wickets to end the series with a striking average of 19.85.

A reliable bowler at the death with a penchant for some lusty hitting down the order, too, Ball looks set to play a key role for England in this series and beyond.

Jasprit Bumrah

It was in the T20 arena that Bumrah first came to the fore with his slingy action and excellent use of the yorker making life difficult for batsmen in the IPL.

No doubt helped by his exploits for the Mumbai Indians, the 23-year-old made both his T20I and ODI debuts for India in Australia last year and as much as T20 may still be considered his strongest format, 17 wickets at 14.64 in his eight one-dayers show he is no slouch in the 50-over game either.

Bumrah played in four of the ODIs against New Zealand and took six wickets, including best figures of 3-35, with an economy rate of just 4.04 - a stat that is all the more impressive considering he was often asked to bowl at the death.

Having added a superbly-disguised slower ball to his armoury as well, England's batsmen are sure to be kept guessing when Bumrah has the ball in hand.
