Somerset upset by Middlesex as Durham land the title
Durham Dynamos clinched the Natwest Pro40 League Division Two title with a 70-run victory over Glamorgan Dragons on Saturday. Skipper Dale Benkenstein hit an unbeaten 58 as the Dynamos smashed 271-8 from their 40 overs. Michael Di Venuto also chipped in with 55 after the home side had been put into bat at the Riverside. Gareth Rees' maiden one-day half-century gave the basement boys hope, with Michael O'Shea (49) also chipping in. But Ottis Gibson continued his fine form with 2-48 and Paul Wiseman took 3-18 to halt the Welsh at 201-9.Shock
The Friends Provident Trophy winners celebrated their shock title victory at the close, but they will have to wait for the Pro40 cup to arrive from Taunton, where the Somerset Saberes lost to the Middlesex Crusaders. Justin Langer's side went into their clash at home knowing a win would secure them the title. But the County Championship Division Two winners had to be content with runners-up spot after slumping to a seven-wicket defeat. Neil McKenzie hit 86 and Langer contributed 54, but the Sabres could only muster 211-9 after electing to bat first. Middlesex seamer Steve Finn took 3-23, and his team-mates then easily chased down their target to earn the Crusaders a play-off spot. Openers Ed Joyce (77) and Ed Smith (80) laid the foundations for victory in their partnership of 154. And Andrew Strauss and Jamie Dalrymple knocked off the runs for Middlesex to secure third spot in the standings.Amazing finish
Jade Dernbach hit a last ball six to guide Surrey Brown Caps to a one-wicket win over Leicestershire Foxes. Mark Butcher's side managed to chase down a target of 232, though it was not enough to keep their promotion hopes alive. Mark Ramprakash (72), Butcher (62) and Matt Nicholson (57 not out) got them close, but number 11 Dernbach was left requiring two runs off the last ball. His six over long-off was a dramatic finale to the match as the Brown Caps signed off their limited overs season in style. Phoenix rise
Michael Vaughan notched his highest limited overs score in more than two years as Yorkshire Phoenix beat Derbyshire Phantoms by 107 runs. England's Test captain fell five runs short of his century, but the damage had already been done with the Phoenix managing an imposing total of 236-5. Ireland's World Cup seamer Boyd Rankin took 2-56, but the Phantoms were all out for just 129 in reply. Skipper Simon Katich struck an impressive 38 in the chase, but Deon Kruis took 4-17 on his return from injury to ensure the points for the home side at Headingley.Click below for full scorecards:
