Hampshire's former England spinner Shaun Udal has announced his retiremement from first-class cricket. The 38-year-old has enjoyed a fruitful 19 years in domestic cricket - taking 724 wickets - and received a guard of honour after the side's Pro40 defeat at Lancashire on Sunday. He played in four Tests and 11 one-day internationals for England, and will best be remembered for bowling the country to victory in his last appearance against India in March 2006. Udal had been set for talks over a new contract after Hampshire's final match of the season away at Yorkshire from Wednesday.

But Hampshire's 11th all-time top wicket taker says he wanted to quit while still on top of his game. "It was the hardest decision I've ever had and I've enjoyed a long time at one club," he told Sky Sports News. "I've been lucky enough to play for a fantastic side and I've played with some brilliant players. "I could well have hung around for another year or so, but I'd just be doing that. I'd just be hanging on. "It's best to go out on your own terms rather than be pushed out of the door." The decision ends speculation he could join Somerset, as the one-club man still wants to maintain his connection with Hampshire.
