Pace bowler rewarded after career-best figures against Somerset

Surrey have handed Jade Dernbach a contract extension that will keep him with the county until the end of the 2010 season. The 22-year-old fast bowler was in the final year of his current deal at the Brit Oval but has been rewarded for a fine start to the summer. Dernbach has been a consistent performer for the county in one-day cricket in recent years, picking up 49 wickets in 31 matches. However, the South African-born seamer has now forced his way into the LV County Championship side, taking a career-best 6-72 in a losing cause against Somerset recently.

Commitment

"Jade's contract was up at the end of this season and I said that I would be prepared to re-negotiate if he proved to me that his attitude, commitment and everything that goes with being a professional cricketer was right," Surrey cricket manager Alan Butcher said. "He has done that to my satisfaction, therefore we offered him a new contract from now, and his performance against Somerset has fully justified that. "He has been knocking on the door all season and could have played at any time. He has come on leaps and bounds and fully deserves his contract."
