Kent bowler is to retire this month

Martin Saggers, Kent's former England seamer, has announced he is to retire from first-class cricket at the end of the current campaign due to injury. The 37-year-old, who has represented Kent for ten years, will retire this month after failing to overcome a knee injury he picked up last month. Saggers, who also played for Durham, said: "I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing first-class cricket. "It was great fun with Kent and obviously I wouldn't have played for England if I hadn't impressed with my county side. "It is disappointing to finish my playing career through injury because I believe that I was still bowling well enough to have continued playing for a season or two more." Saggers took 83 wickets with Kent in 2002 and went on to take seven wickets during his three Test appearances for England. At Headingley, Saggers took the wicket of New Zealand opener Mark Richardson with his first Test delivery in England colours. "Finishing as leading wicket taker in the country, in 2002, was a huge honour," added Saggers. "I then got the opportunity to represent England in three Test matches and got a wicket with my first delivery in Test cricket on English soil. That was a real highlight and a memory, which I will always cherish."
