All-rounder likely to miss the World Cup due to ankle injury

Dimitri Mascarenhas is set to miss the ICC World Twenty20 after discovering his ankle injury is "a little worse than originally feared." The Hampshire captain turned his ankle and hurt his Achilles while playing in the Indian Premier League for Rajasthan Royals last week. The 32-year-old was named in England's initial 30-man squad for the tournament staged in the West Indies which is set to start on April 30. However with the final squad set to be named on March 30, it is unlikely the all-rounder will make the 15-man cut. Mascarenhas who has 14 Twenty20 caps to his name and has participated in the two previous World Cups - in South Africa and England - has returned to England to resume treatment with his county. Hampshire manager Giles White has confirmed that his captain's injury may take longer to heal than first hoped. He said: "The injury is a little worse than originally feared, but that's the worst-case scenario." Hampshire's first fixture of the season is a trip to Chelmsford to face newly promoted Essex in the LV=County Championship on April 9.
