World No 1 Michael van Gerwen admits he was worried when he allowed Rene Eidams to force a tie-break in his opening round match of the Darts World Championship

Michael van Gerwen could not disguise his relief after his tense 3-2 win over Rene Eidams at the World Darts Championship.

The tournament favourite was two legs away from a huge upset defeat against the German qualifier, who fought back from 2-0 down to force a tie-breaker in the decisive set, which saw Van Gerwen eventually battle through at Alexandra Palace.

Van Gerwen joined Wayne Mardle in the Sky Sports studio and gave a damning assessment of his own performance, admitting that he should 'never' have been dragged into that desperate position.
