The Amsterdam side shrugged off their midweek Champions League exit at the hands of Celtic to claim a fine win at De Kuip.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (pictured), who has been so impressive during pre-season since his summer move from Malmo, opened his Eredivisie account with the first goal on 64 minutes - the strike being all the more notable as he had only been on the pitch for two minutes - coming on as a replacement for Nikos Machlas.
Ajax, though, were immediately placed on the back foot when Hatem Trabelsi was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence.
The home side pressed forward for an equaliser and Ajax took advantage of the space to seal the win when Rafael van der Vaart scored with eight minutes remaining.
Feyenoord pulled a goal back through Danish striker Jon Dahl Tomasson in injury-time, but it proved to be a mere consolation.
Goals by Jan Michels, Fred van den Hoorn and Mourad Mghirizat gave Den Bosch a 3-0 win over Fortuna Sittard.
RKC Waalwijk proved far too strong for Groningen, running out 4-0 winners. Johan Gudjonsson grabbed a brace, one being a penalty, and his goals were accompanied by strikes from Rick Hoogendorp and Yuri Cornelisse, the former firing home from the penalty spot.
