Ajax confirm Gunners' Trabelsi deal

Ajax have confirmed that Arsenal are closing in on the signature of defender Hatem Trabelsi after agreeing a fee with the Dutch giants for the player.

Dutch media reports on Thursday claimed Trabelsi was on the verge of a move to Highbury and Ajax have now revealed a deal has been agreed between both parties for the Tunisian international.

Ajax are willing to let Trabelsi leave the Amsterdam ArenA after a dispute with the club over his contractual situation.

Newcastle have also been strongly linked with Trabelsi, but it appears Arsene Wenger has won the race for the player's signature.

"It is nice that this case has been dealt with," Ajax director Arie van Eijden told Dutch daily AD Sportwereld.

"Just a few minor details must be handled before Arsenal will declare it official.

"We have had an agreement with Arsenal for several days but we had to wait until Arsenal and the player reached an agreement."

Arsenal are believed to be paying a fee in the region of ‚é¼6 million (£4 million) to take Trabelsi to Highbury and he will battle it out with Lauren for a place in the starting line-up next season.

Ajax coach Ronald Koeman was happy to see Trabelsi depart after falling out with the player due to his contract wrangle.

"It's good with me, I did not want to see him any more at Ajax anyway," blasted Koeman.
