Esther Henseleit denied Chiara Tamburlini an automatic Solheim Cup pick for a Team Europe debut after an extraordinary finish to the AIG Women’s Open.
The qualification campaign to feature in Anna Nordqvist's team ended at Royal Lytham & St Annes on Sunday, with the top two players in the European Solheim Cup points list and the next six in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings securing their automatic spots.
Tamburlini arrived with a slender 1.1-point advantage over Helen Briem in the European Solheim Cup points list, only to miss the cut and leave qualification hopes out of her hands.

Henseleit - already set to qualify via her world ranking - needed to finish solo second or better to overtake Tamburlini, with the German guaranteeing the required points when a sensational final-hole birdie forced a play-off against Shiho Kuwaki.
A play-off loss on the second extra hole left Henseleit second in the European Solheim Cup points list behind Charley Hull, earning her a second successive appearance for Team Europe, with Tamburlini - who missed out by just 0.9 points - now requiring a captain's pick when Nordqvist finalises her side on Monday.
"Happy with how I gave myself the opportunity to win and how I handled myself, just got a bit unlucky on the second play-off hole there," Henseleit said. "I tried really hard and I guess it just wasn't meant to be today."
Lottie Woad could have also overtaken Tamburlini in the European points list by finishing solo third or better, but ended four strokes back in tied-sixth to see her Solheim Cup debut confirmed from the world rankings.
France's Celine Boutier, Spain's Carlota Ciganda and Swedish duo Maja Stark and Linn Grant also had their Solheim Cup automatic spots confirmed, with Nanna Koerstz Madsen snatching the last spot from the world rankings after Henseleit's change in qualification route.
Nordqvist will complete her line-up with four captain's picks on Monday, live from 3pm on Sky Sports Golf and Sky Sports News, ahead of the biennial contest being held at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands from September 11-13.
"Overall, with the picks, if you played well this year, you're probably going to get a pick," Nordqvist explained to Sky Sports. "But the only way to really control it was by playing yourself in."
Who is in contention for a Solheim Cup pick?
Leona Maguire came into the AIG Women's Open as the next highest-ranked player in the world rankings not in the automatic spots, with the Irishwoman having previous experience of winning a Solheim Cup but struggling for form this season.
Spain's Julia Lopez Ramirez started the week as the next highest-ranked player in the world rankings, with Nastasia Nadaud, Ingrid Lindblad, Mimi Rhodes and Helen Briem the other available European players inside the world's top 100.
"I've dreamt about it [Solheim] since I picked up a golf club and it would be honestly the highlight of my career," Rhodes said after her final round. "To represent Europe would be a massive thing and I would be over the moon."
Tamburlini could be handed a captain's pick after agonisingly missing out on qualification automatically, having won three times on the Ladies European Tour in 2024 but struggled on her maiden full season on the LPGA Tour.
"I want it [Solheim Cup spot] so badly but sometimes the things you want so badly almost hinder your performance more," Tamburlini, reduced to tears, exclusively told Sky Sports on Friday. "I feel like my game is, as stupid as it sounds, not that terrible really. The margins, we all know it, are so small."
Czech player Sara Kouskova briefly moved inside the projected automatic spots with her final-round charge at Royal Lytham, posting a four-under 67 despite dropping three shots over her final two holes.
Briem and Agathe Laisne, both winners on the Ladies European Tour this season, were the two immediately below Tamburlini in the LET rankings but also made early major exits.
Dewi Weber is ineligible to feature on home soil due to not being a Ladies European Tour member, while Madelene Sagstrom - part of the last three Solheim Cups and inside the world's top 90 - is expecting a child next month and not available for selection.
