Europe Ryder Cup vice-captain Thomas Bjorn says Matthew Fitzpatrick and Chris Wood are in a strong position to make the team for Hazeltine

Matt Fitzpatrick will get the chance to showcase his Ryder Cup credentials with a first-round clash against European vice-captain Thomas Bjorn at the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play.

The Nordea Masters champion, who currently sits sixth in the European points list and ninth in the World standings, has still yet to guarantee qualification for Hazeltine after four missed cuts in his past five starts.

This week's appearance is the sixth of eight tournaments in a nine-week stretch for Fitzpatrick, as he tries to impress and earn enough points to hold on to the final automatic spot and book a maiden Ryder Cup appearance.

It's the second year the 64-man knock-out tournament has featured on the European Tour schedule, with Kiradech Aphibarnrat beating Robert Karlsson in the final of last year's inaugural event.

Top seed Chris Wood, who bolstered his chance of making Darren Clarke's Ryder Cup side with BMW PGA Championship victory, begins his challenge against Australia's Brett Rumford.

Tournament host Lawrie takes on Hong Kong Open runner-up Lucas Bjerregaard, while home favourite Marc Lawrie, who reached last year's semi-finals, has been drawn alongside Spain's Jorge Campillo.

Scottish Open champion Alex Noren kicks off his week against Scott Jamieson, as Richie Ramsay faces former Dunhill Links champion David Howell.
