Rory McIlroy returns to Boston as defending champion at this week's Dell Technologies Championship.

Rory McIlroy has not given up hope of another late FedExCup title challenge as searches for a return to the winner’s circle at the Dell Technologies Championship.

The world No 4 is without a worldwide victory during his injury-affected year and hasn't won since snatching Tour Championship victory and the $10m FedExCup jackpot last September.

McIlroy returns to TPC Boston as defending champion after his two-shot victory over Paul Casey last year, with the four-time major champion coming into the week 43rd in the FedExCup standings.

"I sort of find myself in a similar position this week as I was last year, needing a good week to sort of kick-start the next few weeks," McIlroy said in a pre-tournament press conference on Thursday.

"Hopefully I can find that little spark that I found last year and go on and play well from here until the Tour Championship.

"I feel like I'm still very capable of winning, you know, one or two of these next three events and giving myself a chance to win the FedExCup."

McIlroy hasn't experienced a winless year worldwide since 2008 - his first year as a professional - with the Northern Irishman only scheduled to make three more starts this year after this week.

"I'd hate to think that I'll end this year without a win," McIlroy added. I've got four tournaments left, really, until I can hopefully make that happen.

"It would be nice to get a win before I shut it down for a while. I feel like I'm capable.

"It's not as if I'm out there and I'm hurting myself or making it any worse. I feel like I can still go out there and compete. So if you can do that, why not give it a go?"
