Lowry won his maiden major title at Royal Portrush by six strokes on Sunday and has celebrated his success in Ireland, with a homecoming to take place in native Clara, Co Offaly on Tuesday evening.

The PGA announced Lowry's withdrawal in a statement, which did not cite an official reason, on Twitter: "The Open champion Shane Lowry has withdrawn from the WGC-FedEx."

Lowry's triumph at the oldest major saw him move up to a career-high 17th in the world rankings.

27 European Tour members will take part, including Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose, but Tiger Woods is absent from the 64-player field.
