Montgomerie still keen to play under Faldo in Ryder Cup.

Colin Montgomerie is still keen to play under Nick Faldo in next year's Ryder Cup despite the recent fall-out between the two. Montgomerie is currently in Mission Hills in China preparing for the World Cup, but his eyes are already peeking towards Ryder Cup qualification. Faldo had a Ryder Cup warm-up at the recent Seve Trophy, when the Scot was accused of not attending all the team meetings. Monty, while not happy with Faldo's comments in the media, insists he is still striving to be part of the next Europe Ryder Cup team, captained by Faldo, which travels to Kentucky next year. "Nick said something, I'm always open for comment, my mobile phone is there, but for someone to say something in the press about me I simply don't agree with," Montgomerie told Sky Sports News. "I think that should have been done to me, if he had any grievance, but as a team player over the last 20 years I don't understand what that was about and a number of my team-mates have said the same. "That's fine though, I'll try my best to be in Nick's team come 2008, I'll be honoured to play under him and look forward to it."

British hopes

Montgomerie believes that the European team for the Ryder Cup next year will again be dominated by the British golfers. The veteran is happy with the amount of young players coming through, especially European Tour winner Justin Rose. "He's our top British player right now and good luck to him," Montgomerie said of Rose. "Harrington winning a major was fantastic, and I think Justin will win a major shortly, he's that good. "He's come through, he had a tough time when he first turned pro, it was a very tough time, he had 20-odd missed cuts in a row which is almost a year of missed cuts which could finish a lot of people, but he must have had some inner strength to recover from that and he's done very well. "He's still a young man, people forget that he's only 26 and he's got a super future ahead of him and I'm glad he won the European Tour as he did." The next Ryder Cup will be staged at the Valhalla Golf Club and Montgomeries believes the European team will be full of young British stars. "British golf is on the up, the last Ryder Cup contained nine British golfers out of our 12, and it'll be the same this next time around with Justin Rose, Casey, Donald and Howell. "There's a number of young British players, Fisher and Westwood is coming back into it, and I think it's super for English and British golf."
