Danish Golf Championship: Jeff Winther pips fellow Dane Rasmus Højgaard in thrilling finish to DP World Tour event

Jeff Winther ended a four-year wait to claim his second DP World Tour title on Sunday at the Danish Golf Championship, pipping compatriot Rasmus Højgaard in a thrilling finish.
Højgaard had been two shots behind the leader heading into the 17th hole, but sensationally chipped in for eagle from over a bunker to tie Winther at Great Northern Golf Club.
His stay at the top of the leaderboard was short-lived, with Winther immediately responding on the 16th with an eagle of his own, putting out after landing his drive on the green of the 304-yard par four.

The 38-year-old made par on the 17th and 18th to end his final round with a five-under-par 67, and took a two-shot clubhouse lead over China's Yanhan Zhou.
Zhou needed a hole-in-one on the par-three 18th hole to force a play-off with the Dane, but when he three-putted to make a bogey on the last, Winther's three-shot victory at his home event was officially confirmed.
Zhou would finish his week tied for second at 12 under par alongside a group of five other players that included Højgaard, England's Matthew Jordan, Finland's Oliver Lindell and Italian Filippo Celli.
Winther, who had worked as a greenskeeper 15 years ago, had never thought he would become a professional golfer, let alone become only the second winner of the Danish Golf Championship.
"[It's] impossible to rank this," the 38-year-old said after his round. "Just after my kids' birth. It was amazing.
"I don't think it's sunk in yet. I'm overly happy; we've been clapped off on every single green. Even when we hit poor shots. Still getting clapped off! The crowds carried me all week. It's been unbelievable."
"I was never going to be a golfer. This is just insane, I'm in shock," he added.
Winther, whose last DP World Tour victory came at the 2021 Mallorca Golf Open, began his final round four shots behind overnight leader Romain Langasque, who endured a nightmare Sunday, posting five bogeys in his opening six holes to shoot a three-over-par 75 and end his week tied for seventh.
The Dane endured a mixed start, making two birdies on the fourth and fifth holes before bogeying the sixth and eighth.
A brilliant approach to the island green on the ninth set him up for another birdie before the turn, and Winther made more gains on the 10th and 13th.
But it was only after sinking his dramatic 31ft eagle putt on the 16th that he began to believe he had a chance of outlasting Zhou and Højgaard, who had just tied him at the top of the leaderboard.
"Rasmus chips in and I'm like: 'He just wants some attention, doesn't he?'" Winther said. "Then I sunk my own eagle putt, and I was over the moon. When that putt went in, that was the first time today I thought I had a chance."
Højgaard: It's not a great feeling coming up short
Højgaard began his final round five strokes off the lead, but it was a tricky day for the European Ryder Cup star, who would combine two bogeys and two birdies to make the turn at level par.
After a birdie on the 11th and another bogey on the 12th, Højgaard would surge late, making back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 before his eagle on the 17th.
His round would end on a sour note, with the Dane bogeying the last hole to shoot a three-under 69 and finish tied for second.
"I didn't expect to be in the position I was in coming down the last hole," Højgaard said. "To be honest, I struggled with my game all day. I made a few birdies and holed out, and then you're in the mix again.
"But I finished with a bogey, and that put more pressure on.
"I'd say when I made birdie on the 16th, I felt I could put up a good chance on 17, and then I'd be 12 under and potentially 13 under would have a chance.
"It was great to put myself in positions where I had a chance. But it's not a great feeling right now."
