Lam Chih Bing returns for a third crack at the Open Championship hoping to spark his season into life.
Singaporean returns for first time since making cut in 2008
Singapore's Lam Chih Bing returns for a third crack at the Open Championship and this time has turned it into a family occasion.
Lam, who mainly plays on the Asian Tour, is accompanied by his parents and wife at Royal St George's this week.
"It's just wonderful having them here. They have always supported me throughout my career and on a week like this, it's great to have them around," he said.
"I think the main goal for me is to play four solid rounds and that would make me happy."
Conditions
The 34-year-old's first target is to make the cut and he believes his driving will be the key to achieving that ambition.
"Surprisingly for a links course, you've to use a lot of drivers on almost all the holes except for probably one or two. So the key is really to get your driver in position," added Lam, who earned his spot in the field at the qualifying event in Thailand in February.
"I also find the greens very tricky but obviously a lot will depend on the wind conditions as when it picks up, it's going to be a very difficult."
Lam missed the cut on his Open debut in 2007 after rounds of 76 and 77 at Carnoustie, but bounced back the following year to survive the weekend at Birkdale, the first Singaporean in tournament history to do so.
"I've been there, made the cut, would like to do better than the last time. It's just a special feeling and I'm going to enjoy it," he said.
Special
"I remembered playing the third round with Tom Lehman in 2008. Tom, being a past champion, got a standing ovation almost on every green and it was something special to be in the same pairing with him that week."
Lam, whose only career win came in 2008 on the Asian Tour, believes a good showing at Sandwich can provide the springboard for the rest of his season.
"When you play well in a major tournament like this, it'll obviously give you the confidence and spur you on to play better," he said.
"I hope to rediscover that form again starting with a good performance this week."
