A bogey at the last leaves Tiger Woods two shots off leader Jason Gore heading in to the final round of the Wyndham Championship.
The world No 286, who needs to finish outright second or better this week to have any chance of qualifying for the season-ending play-offs, closed a two-under 68 after seeing his six-foot par-save at the 18th lip-out.
Resuming in a share of the lead with Tom Hoge, Woods made a 10-footer at the first hole and a two-putt birdie at the par-five fifth to stay in a tie at the top of the leaderboard,
Woods reached the turn in a share of the lead alongside Gore and Jonas Blixt, who was already back in the clubhouse thanks to a birdie-filled 62 at Sedgefield CC, but a seventh birdie of the round at the par-four 15th saw Gore take the outright advantage.
"I know what I needed to do this week and I feel like I've been playing good for the past two months, so it's nice to get rewarded for it," Blixt told Sky Sports 4. "I think that the start of the year I just didn't drive it well enough and missed a lot of cuts.
"Going in to this week I'd have been very pleased to secure my job and a win would take care of that. If I can shoot another 62, that should give me a good chance."
An eight-foot birdie at the last completed a bogey-free 62 for Gore, as Woods holed a lengthy putt at the 10th to post the first in a string of impressive par-saves on the back nine.
The 14-time major champion kept in contention by following a 10-foot birdie at the 16th with a tricky downhill putt to save par at the next, but will now tee off in the penultimate pair on Sunday alongside Scott Brown.
In a bunched field where 20 players head in to the final round within five strokes of the lead, Webb Simpson birdied four of his final six holes to close a six-under 64 and join Paul Casey in the group on 12 under, while defending champion Camilo Villegas lies seven shots off the pace.
"I'm really happy, I played great today," Simpson told Sky Sports 4. "I even feel the two bogeys should have been pars, so it was a great day.
"I'm really happy with how I hung in there and fought after that bogey at the 11th and made some birdies coming in. There's a lot to play for at this time of the season, so I'm just happy to be in good form."
