McIlroy went into the final round at Valhalla in 2014 with a one-shot advantage, only to bogey two of his opening six holes on Sunday and briefly slip three strokes behind early on his back nine.

The Northern Irishman responded by firing his 280-yard approach at the par-five 10th to six feet and rolled in the eagle putt to get within one, before birdieing the 13th to move back into a share of the advantage.

As Henrik Stenson and Rickie Fowler bogeyed the 14th and Phil Mickelson dropped a shot at the 16th, McIlroy birdied the 17th to move two ahead heading to the par-four last.

Mickelson - playing in the group ahead - almost chipped in on his way to a closing birdie in near-darkness, before McIlroy got up-and-down from a greenside bunker to post a two-putt par in rapidly fading light and hold on for a one-shot victory.

McIlroy's victory was his third in as many worldwide starts and saw him become the first back-to-back major winner in six years, as well as only the fourth player to win four majors before turning 25.
