Veteran British rider David Millar has inadvertently confirmed his selection in the Tour de France for a 13th and final time.

The 37-year-old took to Twitter to announce he was heading to Monmouthshire for Thursday's British national championship time-trial and Sunday's road race before going on to the Tour, which begins in Leeds on July 5.

Millar wrote: "Last time leaving home to race Nationals/TdF. More hectic than ever."

Millar is retiring at the end of the current season and swiftly apologised to his Garmin-Sharp sporting director Charly Wegelius for announcing his selection ahead of the final nine-man squad being declared publicly.

Millar added: "Don't think I was supposed to say I was doing the TdF. Sorry @wegelius. I'm an idiot."

Millar is one of six Britons to have worn the Tour leader's yellow jersey and is also expected to compete for Scotland in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow once the Tour concludes in Paris on July 27.
