Tables, Ladders and Chairs: Read our potted history of the event
John Cena is never far away from a big TLC story...
Thursday 11 December 2014 11:20, UK
There has been plenty of eye-catching – and bone-crunching – action since the Tables, Ladders and Chairs extravaganza became a staple of the WWE calendar.
The sixth annual TLC event takes place in Cleveland on Sunday night, live on Sky Sports 1, with Superstars such as Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler set to wield weapons.
WWE’s current top crop will make Tables, Ladders and Chairs 2014 a must-see show when they compete in a series of exhilarating contests, including the inaugural Steel Stairs duel between the monstrous Erick Rowan and Big Show.
But if your mind is a little sketchy in regards to the previous five editions of WWE's pre-Christmas gala, where John Cena has been a fundamental figure, let us jog your memory.
As you will see, much has changed in the grappling world since 2009…
TLC 2009
Where: AT&T Center, San Antonio, Texas
Main Event: Jeri-Show v D-Generation X - TLC Match for the WWE Tag Team Titles
Synopsis: Triple H and Shawn Michaels will go down as one of the most iconic duos in history but their victory over Chris Jericho and Big Show earned them their first - and only - reign as WWE Tag Team Champions. The Heart Break Kid scaled a ladder to retrieve the garlands hanging above the ring as his partner, The Game, held the metal structure steady. Christian also climbed high to keep the ECW Title within his grasp and out of Shelton Benjamin's, but the undoubted shock of the night saw Sheamus send John Cena crashing through a table to win his maiden WWE Championship. Elsewhere, World Heavyweight Champion The Undertaker battered Batista in a Chairs Match to retain his gold, while, in no-frills singles encounters, Randy Orton overcame Kofi Kingston, Scottish fighter Drew McIntyre defeated John Morrison to win the Intercontinental Championship, and Divas champion Michelle McCool - with Layla's help - conquered fan favourite Mickie James.
TLC 2010
Where: Toyota Center, Houston, Texas
Main Event: John Cena v Wade Barrett - Chairs Match
Synopsis: Cena exacted revenge on long-time nemesis Barrett three years ago, not only by pinning the Brit, but also by sending a flotilla of chairs crashing on top of him to close out the show. Elsewhere, TLC veteran Edge braved the weaponry to defeat World Heavyweight Champion Kane, Rey Mysterio and Alberto Del Rio in a frantic Fatal Four-Way, while in a Tables Match for the WWE Title, The Miz got the better of Orton. The Awesome One's next opponent was also decided as Morrison saw off the challenge of Sheamus in a Number One Contender's Ladder Match, plus Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov remained WWE Tag Team Champions when their dust-up with Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater was curtailed due to interference from the rest of Nexus. In addition, Dolph Ziggler conquered Kofi Kingston and Jack Swagger in an Intercontinental Title Ladder Match, and Natalya and Beth Phoenix clobbered Lay-Cool.
TLC 2011
Where: 1st Mariner Arena, Baltimore, Maryland
Main Event: CM Punk v Alberto Del Rio v The Miz - TLC Match for the WWE Title
Synopsis: Punk's beating of The Mexican Aristocrat and The Awesome One to keep his strap was memorable enough but perhaps the most long-lasting image of the TLC contest was when Del Rio's ring announcer, Ricardo Rodriguez, fell off a ladder and plummeted through a table at ringside. Meanwhile, the United States and World Heavyweight Titles changed hands - Zack Ryder beat Ziggler to claim the former and Daniel Bryan cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to win the latter - while Tag Team Champions Evan Bourne and Kofi Kingston, Divas Champion Beth Phoenix and Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes beat Primo and Epico, Kelly Kelly and Booker T respectively. Plus, Orton sent Barrett careering through pine in a Tables Match, Sheamus made light work of Jack Swagger and, in arguably the most personal fight of the night, Triple H clattered Kevin Nash in a Sledgehammer Match that was as brutal as it sounds.
TLC 2012
Where: Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York
Main Event: Dolph Ziggler v John Cena - Ladder Match for Ziggler's Money in the Bank Contract
Synopsis: Cena went into TLC with AJ Lee on his arm and the chance to win the Money in the Bank contract - but he left with neither. The Cenation Leader seemed primed to snare Ziggler's prize - which the Show-Off eventually cashed in on Del Rio the night after WrestleMania 29 - but saw the ladder he was climbing shoved over by Lee, allowing Ziggler to regroup, capture his holdall and then play tonsil tennis with Lee. In other action, The Shield (Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns) beat Team Hell No in their debut WWE Match - a high-octane TLC encounter - and Big Show overpowered Sheamus in a Chairs Match for the World Heavyweight Title. Plus, Team Rhodes Scholars (Cody Rhodes and Damien Sandow) saw off Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara, Cesaro retained the United States Title in a contest with R-Truth, Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston defeated Wade Barrett, and Divas Titlist Eve Torres dealt with Naomi. Oh yeah, and The Brooklyn Brawler made a rare appearance, teaming with Del Rio and The Miz to beat 3MB.
TLC 2013
Where: Toyota Center, Houston, Texas
Main Event: John Cena v Randy Orton – TLC Match to unify the WWE and World Heavyweight Titles
Synopsis: Orton emerged as WWE’s kingpin last year after knocking off storied nemesis Cena to become the first WWE World Heavyweight Champion. The Viper thought his ascent up the ladder to claim the belt would be easy when he handcuffed Cena to the ropes and tossed they key into the crowd, but the Chain Gang Soldier stayed in the contest after unscrewing the turnbuckle and slackening the ropes. Cena’s comeback was quelled, though, when he was thrust head first into a wooden table, leaving Orton free to pluck the strap that hung above. Elsewhere, CM Punk – who has since quit WWE and joined UFC – beat The Shield in a three-on-one handicap match, before Daniel Bryan – who is currently injured – lost a similar bout to The Wyatt Family. Plus, Divas Champion AJ Lee and Intercontinental Champion Big E remained gilded by beating Natalya and Damien Sandow respectively, while WWE Tag Team Champions Gold and Stardust won a frantic Fatal Four-Way which also featured Big Show/Rey Mysterio, RybAxel and The Real Americans.
