A nightmare start for the Baltimore Ravens and Lamar Jackson as he injures his hand on his first drive back after a 3 game absence.

Lamar Jackson will undergo surgery on his right thumb and miss at least the next four games on injured reserve, Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Minter confirmed on Sunday.

Jackson suffered the injury on his first play from scrimmage in Baltimore's 36-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills when his throwing hand was hit by pass rusher Greg Rousseau.

Minter announced afterwards that the two-time MVP would be placed on injured reserve, adding "we'll see" when asked if the issue might prove to be season-ending.

Jackson had been making his return to action for one of the biggest matchups of the season after missing the last three games with a high ankle sprain.

Matters were made worse when backup quarterback Tyler Huntley suffered a toe injury in the first half, resulting in undrafted rookie quarterback Joe Fagnano coming in as the emergency third-choice.

Fagnano finished 10 of 21 for 91 yards and an interception as Baltimore fell to 4-4 at the bottom of the AFC North division.

The Ravens are scheduled to face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night, with Liam Coen's side coming off a 42-7 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

The NFL trade deadline is approaching on November 10, giving the Ravens time to dip into the market should they wish.

Jackson entered Sunday having missed 17 games through injury since his first year as full-time starter in 2019, including four last season as the Ravens missed out on the playoffs.
