Running back Adrian Peterson is set to return for the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday after being activated from injured reserve.

Peterson has spent the last three months on the sidelines after suffering a torn meniscus but he returned to practice this week and said on Friday he intends to play against the Indianapolis Colts.

Minnesota have missed his running abilities, ranking last in the NFL with only 73.4 yards per game heading into their week 15 date at home to the Colts.

Peterson himself struggled before going down with injury and he returns looking to add to a tepid 1.6 yards per carry he managed in the first two weeks of the season.

The Vikings are 7-6 heading into the final three weeks of the regular season, two games behind NFC North leaders Detroit but still well in contention for a play-ff spot.

"Being out there confirmed I'm ready to roll," Peterson said on Friday after practice. "I've had my head in the playbook.

"I'm extremely hungry to get out there and help these guys win. That's what it's all about. It's not for yards or anything like that. It's for the guys in this locker room, the sweat during training camp and OTAs (Organised Team Activities).

"We're brothers, we're family. We spend so much time with each other, even more than with family, so that's the reason I've fought so hard to get back is for the guys."

Peterson was given a "designated to return" tag when placed on injured reserve and the Vikings have placed tackle Toby Johnson on waivers to free up a spot on their roster.
