Deshaun Watson, the Houston Texans' rookie quarterback, has suffered a season-ending ligament injury.

Watson was reported to have suffered a torn ACL in practice and underwent an MRI to confirm the injury.

Watson, who led Clemson to the college national championship last season, was an immediate sensation as the 12th overall pick of the 2017 draft. He passed for 1,699 yards and rushed for 269 more and two scores.

He passed for 402 yards and four touchdowns in the Texans' 41-38 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in a thrilling contest in Week Eight.

That performance helped make him become the first rookie quarterback to ever win AFC Offensive Player of the Month honour. He joined Barry Sanders (1989), Edgerrin James (1999), Mike Anderson (2000) and Kareem Hunt (2017) as the only rookies to win the league's player of the month award.

He also was named the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Month of October.

The Texans will start Tom Savage, who was benched in the opener, on Sunday against the Colts.
