Pendleton, who brought the curtain down on her glittering cycling career after London 2012, won a second gold medal in the Velodrome in the keirin event after suffering bad luck in her other events.

Along with Jess Varnish, she went into the team sprint as favourite, but the British pair were relegated in the semi-finals after earlier breaking the world record in qualification.

And in the individual sprint there was more controversy when she was relegated after winning the first run against Australian rival Anna Meares, who went on to take the second and deny Pendleton the chance to go out on a high.

She retired with nine world titles to her name as well as European and Commonwealth honours and was previously awarded an MBE in 2009 for her Beijing success.

Since the Games, Pendleton competed on series 10 of Strictly Come Dancing, but she only made it halfway through the series alongside professional dancer Brendan Cole before being eliminated.

There were also MBEs for Peter Kennaugh and Steven Burke, who were part of the victorious team pursuit line-up with Geraint Thomas and Ed Clancy, who received the same honour in the 2009 list.
