Champion taking his time to as he returns to full fitness
Tony McCoy admits he does not yet feel ready to return to race riding following his fall at Taunton at the end of December.
The champion jockey suffered fractured ribs when parting company with Laudatory on December 30 and although he had hoped to be back in competitive action this week, he has now decided against rushing back.
Speaking in his Telegraph column, McCoy said: "I must have reached the age of discretion, because I've taken the view that as I've been off long enough anyway, there's no point in coming back before I'm good and ready and if that means coming back a little later than intended - then so be it.
"I have not sat on a horse since I broke my ribs on Laudatory at Taunton on Dec 30. I'm feeling pretty good again now though and I've improved each day.
Holiday
"Staying with the boss in Barbados certainly did my head good, hopefully swimming in the sea and a bit of sun on my body helped the bones knit too.
"The only problem with it was that I could have stayed there another month.
"There's no doubt in my own mind that I could ride a horse now, but I am not convinced I could take the impact of another fall just yet.
"The ribs I broke round my back seem fine and I must have slept badly on Wednesday night because the ribs I bust round the front, ones I hardly noticed in the aftermath of the fall, were sore on Thursday, but even they were better again yesterday.
"I am not going to make any concrete decisions about the date of my return until I have seen a specialist in Bristol on Monday.
"I expect he will give me a scan to see how things are going, then I plan to go back to Champneys in Tring for a couple of sessions of kriotherapy. I'll probably start riding out again on Tuesday, and see how I get on.
"In the meantime I've been to Oaksey House, the Injured Jockeys Fund's residential rehab centre in Lambourn, to use the gym and have a bit of gentle physiotherapy."
