Champion racehorse Sea The Stars secured his first winner as a stallion as Mark Johnston's Stars Over The Sea made it third-time lucky at Ayr.
Fanning went on to complete a double on the afternoon as the Dandy Nicholls-trained Fitz Flyer ran out a comfortable winner of the feature Racing UK Your Racing Home From Home Handicap. The 11/8 favourite was chopped in the betting for next month's Stewards' Cup at Goodwood and for the Sky Bet Dash at York on Saturday. Trainer Michael Dods was thrilled to see stable stalwart Barney McGrew end a long losing spell with a determined effort in the Bet & Watch With Racing UK's App Handicap. Without a victory since claiming the Group Three Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle over three years ago, the 10-year-old may have lost a yard of pace since that career-defining triumph, but he retains all of his enthusiasm. Challenged by the hat-trick-seeking West Leake Hare in the last of seven furlongs, the 9/2 shot showed admirable tenacity to hold on by a head. Dods said: "I'm delighted for the old boy. He has done so well down the years, running at a high level, and it's great he's managed to get his head in front again. "He's not as quick as he used to be and stepping him up to seven furlongs has just given him a bit more of a chance. "He'll no doubt be a bit stiff in the morning, so we'll give him a few easy days before we find something else. "Horses like him have a big local following, people back him every time he runs and I'm sure they were getting a bit sick as he hasn't won for so long. "It's great he's gone and done it today, he still loves racing and he's like a two-year-old at home. He's a bit of a handful. You wouldn't believe he was a 10-year-old."
