Spinatrix showed herself to be better than ever when making all to land the £75,000 Coral Sprint Trophy at York at 12/1.

Second in the last two runnings of the Great St Wilfrid, the six-year-old was also touched off in a Listed race at Pontefract only 24 hours after her exertions at Ripon earlier this season.

Due to her preference for cut in the ground, she has not been as busy as some this season and having got back to winning ways at Ripon last time out, she made every yard of the running under apprentice Connor Beasley.

There were plenty of challengers, not least David O'Meara's Highland Acclaim and Paul Midgley's Another Wise Kid but despite drifting across the track, Spinatrix held them all at bay to win by three-quarters of a length.

Highland Acclaim (12/1) was second, with Another Wise Kid (20/1) holding off Rene Mathis (14/1) for third.

"I was pleased with the draw (nine) as all the others who liked to lead were drawn high," said winning trainer Michael Dods."

"I told Conor he would get an easy lead and to do his own thing. It was not going to be easy off top weight - she wasn't even a definite runner until Thursday - and this is a career-best.

"There's the Listed Wentworth Stakes at Doncaster if it is soft enough and then there's a Listed race at Fontainebleau on November 20 she could go for.

"She's really deserved one of these and I'm really chuffed."

Beasley said: "She's been very good to me, and the owners and Mr Dods have been very loyal. That's my biggest win and I only need seven to lose my claim now."

Dods also won the race last year with Mass Rally and although he appeared to be the trainer's leading hope, he could finish only 16th.

"The ground was just a bit sticky for Mass Rally today," Dods added.

Sam James, the rider of Highland Acclaim, was handed a nine-day ban afterwards for using his whip above the permitted level.

He will miss the action on October 25 and 27-31 as well as November 1, 3 and 4.
