In depth

Verdict

Bob Baffert saddles two very expensive youngsters here. Big Mel, an $800,000 yearling, is by the outstanding stallion Quality Road while American Pharoah is the sire of AMERICAN CODE, who cost $350,00 and may be good enough with Drayden Van Dyke on board. The latter made a promising start when runner-up here in March and that experience can enable him to go one better. Simon Callaghan's Valuation is another with an expensive price tag having cost $250,000 at Keeneland while Lane Way, a $550,000 purchase, has shown potential in his three starts and was badly impeded here last time.
