An eventful renewal of the Coronation Cup. The Ballydoyle outsider Song Of Hiawatha cut out a fierce early pace but was closely followed by Macarthur, which set a real puzzle for the remaining riders with the latter a definite stayer. In the 2007 Irish Derby winner SOLDIER OF FORTUNE came through to make a winning seasonal debut under a brillant tactical ride from Johnny Murtagh. As Getaway, against the rail and Soldier Of Fortune gave chase to the floundering Macarthur, the winning rider was fully aware that he could catch Getaway in a pocket and that is what eventually happened. Even if Getaway had the run of the race, it is probable Soldier Of Fortune would have had the upper hand anyway as the Ballydoyle-trained winner had the tactical speed to apply that race winning move. Youmzain filled the runner-up position after being held up to get the 12f trip. His style of racing makes it particularly difficult for his rider and it is likely he and the winner will clash once again in the King George. Macarthur ran a very game race in third. He looked the likely winner for most of the journey.
