SAM WINNER had finished just over 3 lengths behind Le Bec (Shutthefrontdoor in second) on his chase and seasonal debut here last month when receiving 5lbs but comprehensively reversed the form in receipt of a further 3lbs. Sent off at just 4/1 for the Pertemps Final last season, his trainer reported that he was 'never right last year' but this is a horse who has always been held in high regard and handed out a 15 length beating to Grandouet back in 2010. For all that it would be dangerous to view that form in light of subsequent events, it would be just as dangerous to underestimate this six year old wherever he goes next. He's got a good bit of experience under his belt which would stand him in good stead if connections opt to go down the handicap route before returning for the novice events at the Festival. Much will depend, of course, on the handicapper's reaction but given his rating of 140 and the winner's of 149 the rise in his mark may well only be incremental. He jumped soundly in the main and also appeared to enjoy a return to more forceful tactics although that may well just be co-incidental in light of his trainer's comments regarding his well-being last term. His trainer mentioned the National Hunt Chase rather than the RSA as his Festival target but that's a race that he has a modest record in given the firepower at his disposal. This was another very likeable display from the runner-up who was just found out by the weight concession over this longer trip. He will need to improve again to trouble the best novices in this sphere but should continue to hold his own in the right grade and could well come into his own next season as he looks far from the finished article. Le Reve has been set some demanding tasks in his short career as a chaser and has some issues to address with his fencing but he is gaining valuable experience and some place prize money along the way; he should be competitive in handicaps. That is also, ultimately, where the future of Shutthefrontdoor lies even allowing for this below par display. He was a little low at one or two of his obstacles and his effort quickly became laboured after a slight mistake at the top of the hill with connections citing the lack of ease in the ground as a possible reason; there will be other days.
