Feleti Mateo has been allowed to terminate his contract with the Salford Red Devils for family reasons.

The Tonga international loose forward joined the Red Devils just before the transfer deadline in July, but leaves after making only three appearances.

Mateo joined the Super League club at the same time as Luke Burgess, with both coming in from the NRL's Manly Sea Eagles.

Neither player had been able to halt Salford's slide and, with only one win from their four games so far in the Super 8s Qualifiers, they are in serious danger of slipping down to the Championship.

They currently sit in sixth place ahead of only Batley and winless Featherstone, who they face next at home on Sunday, and need to finish at worst fifth to have a chance of staying in the top division.

A club statement read: "Salford Red Devils can confirm that recent signing Feleti Mateo has been released from the remainder of his contract to return to Australia for family reasons.
