Cronulla Sharks beat Melbourne Storm in NRL's game of the week

Defending champions Cronulla Sharks ended Melbourne Storm's unbeaten start to the NRL season with a tense 11-2 victory on Sunday.

The Sharks won the rematch of last season's Grand Final with a spirited defensive performance to outlast the Storm in wet conditions.

Cronulla scored 11 unanswered points in the second half to win their third straight game and move up to third spot behind new leaders St George Illawarra and the Storm.

Melbourne had led 2-0 at half-time but Cronulla had moved into a 3-2 lead by the time former Leeds Rhinos player James Segeyaro scored the only try of the game.

St George Illawarra climbed to the top of the standings following a 35-10 trouncing of the Manly Sea Eagles.

England international Gareth Widdop contributed 19 points while his halves partner Josh McCrone set up four tries.

The Sydney Roosters are up to fourth in the ladder after a thumping 32-8 loss to the Brisbane Broncos.

Newly-installed coach Ivan Cleary made an immediate impact with the embattled Wests Tigers upsetting North Queensland 26-16 in Townsville.

The battling Tigers stunned the 2015 champions, who also lost superstar scrum-half Johnathan Thurston with a calf injury late in the game.

Winger Jordan Rapana crossed for a hat-trick of tries as Canberra claimed back-to-back wins for the first time this season in their 42-16 win over Gold Coast.

A last-minute drop goal from Adam Reynolds gave South Sydney a thrilling 21-20 win over Penrith.

Scrum-half Matt Frawley steered the Canterbury Bulldogs to a 22-12 win over bottom side Newcastle, while Kieran Foran thwarted his former team in the New Zealand Warriors' 22-10 win over Parramatta in Auckland.

Playing against the club that granted him an early release from his contract for personal reasons last year, Kiwis international Foran was highly influential and set up two of his team's four tries.
