Wasps crash in Glasgow

Glasgow dealt a serious blow to Wasps' hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup with a 20-10 victory at Firhill.

The result confirms Toulouse as Pool Six winners with a game to spare and leaves Wasps relying on other results in next week's final round if they are to go through to the knockout phase as one of the two best second-place teams.

The Aviva Premiership side started the day with their destiny in their own hands and things looked good when they raced into a 10-3 lead after just 12 minutes.

An early exchange of penalties between fly-halves Ruaridh Jackson and Dave Walder was quickly followed by a converted try from Wasps winger Tom Varndell.

But that was the high point for the visitors, who failed to muster another point as Glasgow - led by a sterling effort from their pack - steadily worked their way back into the contest.

Further penalties from Jackson either side of half-time reduced the home side's deficit to 10-9 and they moved in front when scrum-half Colin Gregor touched down in the 50th minute.

Jackson added another penalty and iced the win with a drop-goal late on to finish with a personal 15-point haul.

Initiative

Showing great initiative Glasgow, on receiving the opening kick, ran the ball and moved from deep in their own 22 to the other end where a penalty was awarded and Jackson opened the scoring in just the second minute.

Walder equalised four minutes later with a strike from just over halfway and six minutes later Wasps scored the opening try.

Despite his scrum being put on the back foot in midfield, number nine Joe Simpson found a huge amount of space before throwing a long pass to Varndell on the left wing and he cruised home before Walder converted from the touchline.

Glasgow dominated the middle part of the half, moving the ball well with flanker Richie Vernon particularly catching the eye.

However the Wasps' defence was never really tested and all Glasgow had to show was a 15th-minute Jackson penalty.

In the 38th minute Walder had a chance to push Wasps further ahead after Glasgow prop Moray Low was penalised for pulling down the scrum.

From very wide on the sodden pitch and just two metres into the Glasgow half, the stand-off's attempt passed just under the bar so Wasps went in leading 10-6.

Gift

Four minutes after the re-start Wasps gave away a penalty on their own 22 in front of the posts when a hand from a maul interfered with home scrum-half Gregor, allowing Jackson to do the honours.

And six minutes later things got worse for the London side, Glasgow spreading the ball wide to left winger Colin Shaw, who stepped inside and produced a great run that ended with him putting in Gregor.

Jackson failed with the conversion but did slot his fourth penalty on 66 minutes and rounded off the scoring five minutes from time with a drop-goal.

Wasps, who have 15 points from their five matches, host Toulouse next Sunday needing a victory to have any chance of advancing.
