Toulon claimed a 34-12 success over Agen at Felix-Mayol on Tuesday, which moves them above their visitors and into third position in the Top 14 table.
In his first game since announcing his retirement from Test rugby, Jonny Wilkinson sent over four penalties but missed with his three conversion attempts, the first as early as the second minute following centre Gabiriele Lovobalavu's try.
Conrad Barnard did reduce the scoreline to 5-3 minutes later, but then followed three Wilkinson efforts that took hosts 14-3 up in this rearranged fixture, which had been affected by an outbreak of parotiditis, a salivary gland infection.
Barnard was again successful from the tee but then Toulon number eight Jone Tawake went in for what looked like being a decisive try in the game, with Wilkinson's conversion to come. However, the Englishman missed the kick and the teams went in at 19-9.
After the turnaround, Toulon quickly had their third try when flanker Leonardo Senatore crossed, but again Wilkinson missed and Barnard made him pay with three more.
But that was the last offering from the visiting fly-half as Toulon eventually scored a fourth following Wilkinson's penalty on 54 minutes, with replacement Konstantin Mikautadze going over. Matt Giteau kicked the conversion that sends Toulon eight points behind Toulouse.
