Hardy takes over from loosehead Pek Cowan, who drops to the bench, where there are five forwards and only two backs.
However, Wallabies number eight Richard Brown has failed a fitness test on an ankle sprain so Tamaiti Horua comes into the side.
Richard Stanford joins the reserves bench in the number 20 jersey.
Lions make three changes to the side that defeated Reds 31-20 in Brisbane last week.
JC Janse van Rensburg has been selected to fill in for injured loosehead prop Heinke van der Merwe.
Hooker Hans van Dyk gets a start while flanker Robert Kruger is brought into the back row with Willie Wepener and Todd Clever starting from the bench this week.
