Florian Mayer produced a superb volley in his quarter-final win over Anreas Seppi in Halle

Florian Mayer produced a piece of athletic brilliance to leave the home fans stunned at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle.

Roger Federer may be gunning for a ninth title at the event and red-hot Austrian Dominic Thiem is on course for a fifth title of the year but unheralded German veteran Mayer stole at least some of the headlines on Friday.

In the final match of the day, the 32-year-old was up against Italy's Andreas Seppi, last year's runner-up and Mayer came through in straight sets to reach the last four.

As well as the victory Mayer ensured the home fans were on their feet with a sensational full length diving volley to wrap up a point in their encounter.
