Roger Federer will continue his preparation for the French Open by taking part in the Mutua Madrid Open next week, live on Sky Sports from Monday.
The world No 3 had initially planned to skip the fourth Masters series event of the season to conserve his energy for the three remaining Grand Slams and Rio Olympics later in the year.
However, his plans have changed having missed nearly three months of the season due to knee surgery, including the Masters series events in Indian Wells and Miami.
The 34-year-old returned to action in Monte Carlo a fortnight ago but suffered defeat to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals, but will now continue his comeback in the Spanish capital.
Federer is a three-time winner in Madrid having claimed the title in 2006, 2009 and 2012 and tournament director Manolo Santana said: "Federer is one of the best players in history and Madrid is a special place for him.
"We are delighted to have him back in the Caja Magica. In addition, he is one of the fans' favourites because of everything he has achieved in his career. We will be welcoming him with open arms."
Federer will be joined in Madrid by defending champion Andy Murray, world No 1 Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal fresh from his wins in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.
