Aljaz Bedene fought back from a set down to beat Gerald Melzer and reach the second round of the French Open in Paris.

On another overcast day at Roland Garros, the British No 2 needed two hours, 20 minutes to register a 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 victory over the Austrian.

The world No 66 lost his serve in the opening game of the match and, despite breaking back three games later, was unable to prevent Melzer from securing a second break in game nine which helped him take the first set.

However, after that, the Slovenia-born 26-year-old took charge of the contest securing a single break of serve in each of the remaining three sets.

He was rarely troubled on his own serve during the final three sets of the match, en route to dispatching an opponent ranked 63 places below him.

The win earned Bedene his first on French clay in three attempts and he will now play the winner of the match between the No 31 seed Federico Delbonis and Pablo Carreno Busta in round two.
