Juan Martin Del Potro has been handed a wild card at this year's US Open after he won silver in the Olympic men's singles tennis tournament.

Great Britain's Laura Robson has also been given an invite into the qualifying tournament as she bids to play her way into the main ladies draw.

Del Potro missed two years' worth of Grand Slam tournaments following a series of wrist operations before returning to that level at Wimbledon in June.

He reached the third round at the All-England Club, beating fourth seed Stanislas Wawrinka in four sets in his second match, before losing to Lucas Pouille.

The Argentine player's world ranking is currently too low at 141st for him to gain direct entry into the final Grand Slam of the year in New York.

He has, however, been invited to play by the US Tennis Association after a run to the Olympic final which took him past Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal before he lost to Andy Murray.

Del Potro won the US Open as a 20-year-old in 2009 when he defeated Roger Federer in five sets but has had problems with both wrists in more recent years.

Murray said of his final opponent on Sunday: "If he stays fit, there's no reason why he can't be up at the top of the game.

"He's done amazing, really, to get back to playing and competing again at this level after all of the issues he had with his wrists.

"Mentally, I can only imagine how frustrating that must have been, to kind of keep going through the same problem and having to try and come back."

Robson is someone who has also suffered with wrist problems and after once occupying a place among the world's top 50 female players, she is now 283rd on the list.

After winning a mixed doubles silver medal with Murray at the 2012 Olympics, she has been absent from the Rio event.

Robson has had limited success at challenger events in America since making her playing comeback from injury earlier this year and will now look to build again.
