Heather Watson is out of the Citi Open after losing two tight sets to Patricia Maria Tig of Romania.

World No 134 Tig has been struggling for wins of late but she eventually prevailed 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-3) against the British No 2 after a match which lasted just over two hours.

Watson had plenty of chances, failing to serve out the first set at 5-3, and then squandering a set point in the next game.

Another went begging at 6-5 and, having forced a tie-break, Tig raced into a 5-2 lead before winning it 7-4.

Tig then carried her momentum into set number two and claimed a 3-0 lead, before serving for the match at 5-3.

However, Watson was not finished and bravely saved a pair of match points before managing to break back.

The World No 75 went on to force a second tie-break but Tig once more had the better of the things in the breaker and reeled off three points in a row from 4-3 to clinch victory.
