Jerzy Janowicz and Albert Ramos-Vinolas won at the Hamburg Open

Rafael Nadal is the top seed at this week's Hamburg Open tennis but the world number 10 lost his opening doubles match in the tournament.

Jerzy Janowicz and Albert Ramos-Vinolas are the highest profile players to win their first-round matches at the Hamburg Open on Monday.

World No 51 Janowicz, the big-serving Pole, defeated Taro Daniel 6-4 6-3 to safely secure his passage into the next round.

Ramos-Vinolas, four places lower on the ATP's rankings, edged Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 7-6 in an all-Spanish contest.

Almagro had a a set point in the second set but went down 7-3 in the tie-break.

Florian Mayer, playing on home soil, recovered from a set down to defeat Albert Montanes 4-6 6-2 6-2 while Lucas Pouille defeated Inigo Cervantes-Huegun 7-6 6-4.

Rafael Nadal is the top-seeded player in the tournament and will open his campaign against Fernando Verdasco on Tuesday although he slipped to a doubles match defeat on Monday.

In Nadal's first event since he lost in the second round of Wimbledon to Dustin Brown, he teamed with Spanish compatriot Jaume Munar but fell 6-4 6-2 to Italian pair Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli.
