Italian can return to tennis action after having ban overturned

Tennis player Filippo Volandri has had his three-month suspension for abusing an asthma drug lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. After taking his case to appeal at CAS, the Switzerland-based court found in the Italian player's favour and he can return to action on the ATP Tour. CAS also ruled that Volandri will have the ATP points and earnings he lost handed back to him, as they overruled the original verdict. Volandri will now only lose the points and earnings he lost from a tournament a year ago in Indian Wells, California, where he lost in the first round and then failed a drug test. Volandri was suspended by the International Tennis Federation on the eve of the Australian Open in January. The ban was due to expire April 14. "It's over. We won," Volandri told Gazzetta dello Sport. "The CAS recognised my good faith. I used the drug only for therapeutic needs and the ban was excessive."
