Glory for American dup against defending champions
Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond bagged the US Open women's doubles title with a 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-3) win over defending champions Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova.
The American duo saved a match point in the second set and showed plenty of composure to win two entertaining tie-breaks in New York.
Huber, who now has six Grand Slam titles to her partner's five, and Raymond rise to the top of the doubles world rankings after the victory.
"I think that's probably one of our biggest assets as a team is our experience," Raymond said in the
New York Times.
"Yes, they were the defending champs and they have two Grand Slams and they've done well, but we have years and years and years of being in finals of Slams, winning the championships, being down breaks in the third set to win or lose a Slam."
Raymond added: "We just really stuck together, even when we were down when they were serving for the match.
"Just grinded it out, and now we're sitting here as US Open champions."
