South Africa great Bakkies Botha believes Eddie Jones is the right man to be appointed as England's new head coach.

Sky sources understand Jones is in talks with the RFU about taking over from Stuart Lancaster, who stepped down from the job last week in the wake of England's disastrous World Cup campaign.

The Australian was assistant to Jake White in South Africa's coaching team which guided the Springboks to the 2007 World Cup.

Second row warrior Botha knows Jones well as a result, and he told Sky Sports News HQ: "Eddie Jones is a phenomenal coach. I learnt a lot off him, especially in 2007.

"I think, definitely, he played a bigger part than a lot of people think for the Springboks in 2007. He brought a lot of calmness into the coaching team, working together with Jake White in France.

"He's just a phenomenal person. When we played Japan we had a nice talk after the game. He's a phenomenal guy, a phenomenal coach as well. Wherever he goes he leaves a footprint.

"For me, I truly believe that England can't go wrong to go on the direction of Eddie Jones."

Australia captain Stephen Moore - like Botha in England to play for the Barbarians against Argentina at Twickenham on Saturday - was given his first cap by Jones in 2006.

Moore, whose team reached the World Cup final, says Jones' attention to detail is one of his biggest assets.

"He's a very through, very professional coach. He'll know what's important to win. I think he'll be excited by the opportunity, the resources and the depth of talent in English rugby," Moore said.

"There's a huge amount for him to work with. He won't leave any stone unturned. He'll be thorough, he'll know what he needs to be successful and he'll be confident he can do a good job."
